Just build up your mines for now, they'll be your source of income until you start raiding.

Building
When you first start out, here is a good build order ripped from the newbie help section:
1. Solar Power Plant Lvl. 1
2. Metal Mine Lvl. 1
3. Metal Mine Lvl. 2
4. Solar Power Plant Lvl. 2
5. Metal Mine Lvl. 3
6. Metal Mine Lvl. 4
7. Solar Power Plant Lvl. 3
8. Crystal Mine Lvl. 1
9. Metal Mine Lvl. 5

This is all they list, but try to get your buildings to look like this as soon as possible:
Metal Mine 9
Crystal Mine 7
Deuterium Synthesizer 5
Solar Plant 10
Robotics Factory 3 (get lvl 1 after solar plant 3, lvl 2 after solar plant 5, and lvl 3 after solar plant 7)
Shipyard 2(get lvl 1 after robotics factory 2 and lvl 2 asap after that)
Research Lab 3 (get lvl 1 after SP6, lvl2 after SP8, lvl 3 after SP10)

Research
Energy Technology lvl 1
Combustion Engine lvl 1
Combustion Engine lvl 2
Espionage Technology lvl 1
Computer Technology lvl 1
Espionage Technology lvl 2
Combustion Engine lvl 3
Computer technology lvl 3

Energy 1 is required for Combustion and Combustion 2 is required for Small Cargo ships, which is your immediate goal. By the time you get to Combustion 2, your Shipyard should be at level 2, which is another requirement for Small Cargos, so as soon as you're there, start building them. DON'T WORRY ABOUT LIGHT FIGHTERS.
