I think people make jokes about human atrocities and failures because it makes them feel better about being human...you know? Like, if i can joke about it, then it wasn't really that terrible of an incident. If someone murdered 60 women, all of them mothers, and one of them happened to be your own mother, you wouldn't take kindly to jokes about the incident. But, when it happens to someone else, and on a large scale, it's ok to make jokes because it wasn't ME (or you), but someone else who died and the level of inhumanity is so low, that if we think of ourselves as being the same creature as the one who committed said atrocities, we feel badly about ourselves, so we tend to disregard it, and make light of the entire situation.
