The weapon does not grow by battle, it grows with level. Kal said that somewhere. The description was made that because they are assuming you grow levels by killing monsters hence by growing levels, your weapon gets stronger.

I think that the different level requirements for the different versions of the scythe are what it's talking about...I don't think it grows in power as you level up, or anything like that.
